Feel Better Soon, Manhattan.

I got a little stir crazy and lonely today so I walked over the Brooklyn Bridge into Manhattan to see what I could see.

The streets in the Financial District are just lined with ConEd trucks and Verizon trucks since there has been a lot of trouble with cell service. There are wrecked sandbags everywhere and water pumps too. Tons of areas are roped off and there are broken office building windows, fallen trees and unbolted garbage cans that were thrown around downtown. And of course, there is no power.

One of the bigger messes is the bus situation. Mayor Bloomberg says the buses are running as normally as they can - but that really is not the case. People are very confused on where to get a bus - MTA officials are telling people one thing, police officers another and bus drivers a completely different story. Getting around town is a huge nightmare.

I watched three people push open the doors at the Duane Reade downtown to steal items out of the store - one stood guard while the other two went in and stole. I reported it to two police officers who basically said they were not going to do anything. So, there is looting in the Financial District too. After that, I decided it best to walk back home.

I'm back in Brooklyn Heights and can show you the pictures I took.
Joe's Office Building
This is Joe's office building. It is right at the tip of Manhattan. The downstairs level is completely flooded and the pump isn't working on this side.
Back of 1 New York Plaza
This is the back of 1 New York Plaza. These are the pumps coming out of the subway station underneath the building. There is still a lot more water to pump out.

US Army Corps of Engineers are here to help figure out how to drain the subway tunnels the quickest. THEN, the they can go down and actually assess the damage.

Toppled planters at a building downtown. There were also broken windows in this office building.

A completely uprooted tree in Battery Park.

ConEd trucks really are everywhere. Almost every street in the Financial District is lined with them.

The garbage cans that were destroyed and were strewn around downtown.

Miriam, thanks for the pictures and the dialog. It's very interesting to get a personal perspective. Glad you are safe! When is Joe due home?

Joe got home Thursday night and was able to get a car home even from the airport. We left Friday morning for Niagara Falls for the weekend, but getting to the airport was quite the adventure (and resulted in an Attorney General complaint)! I'm glad he got home though :)
