Joe planned an amazing Aruba (surprise!) trip for us to take in April. Joe's parents came out to take care of Liliana for the week and we jetted off. Joe's second surprise, was upgrading us to business class, which was pretty awesome. He did such a good job planning this vacation on his own that I think he should be in charge of planning all future vacations!

We went snorkeling twice, ate at some great restaurants and explored some of Aruba. It was so much fun!

Yankees/Toronto Game

About a month ago, Joe was lucky enough to get tickets for a Yankees game. The seats were 2nd row behind 3rd base. The game was great and so were the seats.

Underneath the great seats at Yankee Stadium, they have a restaurant with all you can eat seafood, meat, sushi and a candy wall! No joke. You can take as much candy as you want to your seats. It was awesome.
Picture
Our view from the seats. That's A-Rod on 3rd base. His at-bat song is "Don't Stop Believin" which made me laugh out loud when it started to play.

Serves all of us right. He homered in the game and that's him rounding third.

Hey, Hey, Hey, Hey!

This past Saturday night, Joe and I were able to go to Madison Square Garden for the Rangers game. It was against the Carolina Hurricanes, which is probably why the firm seats were available.

Madison Square Garden was re-done a couple years ago and is nicer for seating. And, it was a night out for us!

The Rangers won, there was almost one hockey fight, and no icing calls. Both teams looked a little under playoff caliber hockey, but I think the Rangers are still in it.
The Rangers' cheer after they score a goal, is Hey! Hey! Hey, hey, hey! It's a far cry from what happens at Yost during hockey games. It's also odd because the announcer in-stadium does almost no announcing. There are no announcements of what penalties are and when a team is back to full strength, basically just one minute left in a period and if there is some kind of promo happening.

It is quite nice going to a sporting event when you don't care at all about the outcome. It's not a stressful event in the least. It was just nice to get out, with Joe, and watch some hockey!

Tonight, I get to go out for a friend's birthday and this weekend we have our usual schedule of swimming and jazz.

We did some more decorating this weekend and even went to get a tree on Thanksgiving! Lily and I picked out some ornaments at Macy's on Friday.

Our tabletop turned into Nutcracker central :)

Our awesome tree!

And the windowsill has our holiday candles!

When I asked Liliana which ornament was her favorite, she immediately pointed out the cardinal (which she picked out at the store, among others).

But when I picked her up, she also pointed out the peacock ornament. It is a really pretty ornament :)

Getting Ready for Christmas!

Today was Christmas arts and crafts day. After having gone over to Paper Source to get a Christmas art kit and it being out of stock, I came back home still in the arts and crafts mood.

The pictures are the results of what I came up with. The paper garland is a twist on Christmas wreaths and hanging garlands - paper punch style. I used a 2 inch paper punch and a jingle bell punch with scrapbook paper I already had. The door hanging is just scented pinecones hanging from ribbons and tied over the door.

It's amazing how much you can do with some ribbon, paper and a glue gun!

(Early) Happy Holidays!

More friends in the city!

One of our friends came into the city last weekend, so we were able to go check out a few things in the neighborhood. There is a lit-up house in Brooklyn Bridge Park and there was also a Festival of Lights under the Manhattan bridge.

Now the bridge has some lights projected onto it. This was the coolest part!

My friend, Andrea, visited this weekend. She was here for work but had some time before her workday and after her workday to indulge in some NYC fun!

Big thanks to Joe for being around and allowing me to get out of the house. He came home earlyish on Thursday so I could get out and stayed home with Lily on Saturday so I could meet Andrea out for dinner and a show.
We headed over to Sarabeth's on Central Park South Friday morning for breakfast and Andrea met Liliana. We sat outside, which was perfect and ate awesome breakfast while Lily colored (thanks also to Andrea for books and crayons to keep Lily occupied). Saturday, we headed out to Momofuku in midtown and over to Pippin the musical. The show was great and the Music Box theatre is beautiful on the inside. I think Joe and I were there years ago for previews of Book of Mormon (I think already 5 years ago!).

I'm getting spoiled by all of the recent visitors in getting out and enjoying the city!

Birthday weekend of fun!

This last weekend, we had lots of visitors. Our friends Michelle and Jim came into town for Michelle's birthday and a Michigan football game. Joe's parents came into town to hang out with Liliana and be grandparents so we could have fun for a few days and not worry about being in and out (mostly out).

A HUGE thanks to the Bueches for coming to hang out with Lily. I definitely appreciated the mental break of being able to leave and know that Lily was in great hands and she got to hang out with her grandparents! It was so nice to get out.

The logos above are a snapshot of the weekend of fun we had. On Thursday, we walked through Brooklyn Bridge Park before grandparents came. We were able to get out Thursday night to a local bar to watch NFL and baseball. And of course, I took Michelle and Jim to my favorite fish spot down the street. I really think I should start getting a discount for referring so many people to this little fish market.

Cool Aunt Michelle brought Liliana a Chicago Mickey Mouse. It definitely looks like a Portillo's Mickey Mouse, but they can't say that on the uniform. It's super cute.
Our celebrity sighting this weekend happened while we were walking down to Brooklyn Bridge Park. The guy on the left in this picture is the lead guitarist for fun (the band). His name is Jack Antonoff and he lives in the neighborhood. He was filming what looked like a commercial for AmEx. I realized later that his real claim to fame is being Lena Dunham's boyfriend.

We are so out of it, we all had to look up who this guy was...does it still count as a celebrity sighting?

Happy hanging out!

This was the line out front of the bakery for Cronuts.
On Friday morning, we headed over to Dominique Ansel's bakery to wait in line for a Cronut. We got to the bakery at 8 a.m. when it opened. There was a line around the corner to get in. Around 9 or a bit later, someone from the bakery came out to inform us that they were close to selling out of the cronut (a mix of a croissant and donut). They had a baguette to let someone hold while in line, to mark where it was likely for the cronuts to sell out. We were 5 people behind the baguette holder.
Picture
The baguette holder. The bakery set this whole line up odd (in our opinion). They counted that each person in front of us would potentially buy their allowed maximum of 2 cronuts. If people do not buy their allowed maximum, then there would be cronuts left for those of us behind the baguette.

The baguette.
Picture
Lucky for us...we went in with the wave of people ahead of us instead of waiting longer and Joe became the baguette holder.
So, we were able to get 4 cronuts.
Picture
The cronut! Today's flavor was apple.
We also got a few other things...some of which were eaten too fast for pictures!

We went for a walk after the bakery to the High Line. It's a park on the west side of the city where there used to be train tracks.

Along our walk, we saw this bizarre photo shoot happening (to the left, obviously). Nice spray tan, dude.

Above is Michelle and Jim posing with the city behind them.
The rest of the weekend was taken up going out for birthday dinner at Casa Mono in Manhattan and heading over to my favorite bakery in the city, Billy's Bakery for birthday cake.
Picture
We headed over to Billy's bakery for dessert after dinner.
Saturday, we headed over to Peter Luger's famous steakhouse for some awesome bacon and steak. The place has been in business for over 125 years, as evidenced by the gold chocolate coins they gave us after our meal.
Picture
The steak was pretty good but Michelle could be the first person ever to be able to review the Salmon for Peter Luger's. She claims it was good, but I don't think it could have been as good as the steak. But the birthday girl can do what she wants :)
Picture
After Luger's, we headed down to Piscataway for the Rutgers vs. Michigan game. Go Blue! Except, we lost. So...we headed back to NYC a little less happy than how we headed down. But on the plus side, the Rutgers game included fireworks and cannon shots. It was a little odd.
Picture
At least Jim is smiling at the camera...Lily was trying her hardest to squirm away but in reality, she LOVED having Jim and Michelle around. New people to wave to and wave back at her! Come back soon :)

Great ending to a great vacation

Joe and I got to go out tonight to see John Oliver film his show. We had a set of extra tickets to we brought our friends Carey and Katie. Carey is Gary's mom (Lily's best friend) - so we hang out every week and Katie is Gary's aunt. We all met in swimming at the Y!

It was awesome to watch John Oliver film and we were pretty impressed that he filmed basically all in one take. He is good enough to do it live, for sure. Great night out!

As I noted on our Facebook page, we have the best babysitter ever. When Lily screamed when we left, Joe and I feared that she would cry the whole time we were gone. We came home a few hours later to a report that after our sitter pulled out balloons from her purse, Liliana wanted to be her best friend. Our babysitter had balloons to blow-up in her purse. AWESOME.
