As some of you know, our family went on vacation last week to Maine. We rented a house and enjoyed time together on the East Coast. It was awesome. After returning home to NYC, I realized part of what was awesome was that we didn't have all of our stuff. It was easier and simpler. It was less stress - not just because we were on vacation, but because there was less to keep track of, less to pick up at the end of the day and less to think about. |
I've been thinking about decluttering for a long time, but don't ever do it. I'm not very good at it. I wouldn't call myself a pack rat - maybe a collector? :)
I remember where I've bought things, my actual thought process and search process for owning most of the things I do - so when it comes to getting rid of things, it's like letting go of whole memories. But, I think it will be helpful to pass things along especially since I've realized that having "stuff" is actually stressing me out.

I'm going to follow "365 Less Things" suggestions for this week and use this to help declutter. This is the schedule for the week:
Monday – Give something away to a friend, family member or work colleague.
Tuesday – Put something into the recycling bin.
Wednesday – Throw something, that is beyond useful to anyone, into the trash.
Thursday – Put something aside to donate to charity.
Friday – Put something out on the street, in your apartment foyer or in the staff room at work with a FREE sign on it. It is always fun to see how quickly this method works.
Saturday - Sell something by any method appropriate for you. On-line, to a friend, family member or work colleague, through an auction house, consignment store, local notice board, garage sale, flea market or any method possible.
Sunday - Sunday is reserved for contemplating one particular item, of your choice that is proving difficult for you to declutter. Whether that be for sentimental reasons, practical reasons, because the task is laborious or simply unpleasant, or because the items removal requires the cooperation of another person. That last category may mean that the item belongs to someone else who has to give their approval, it could also mean there is a joint decision to be made or it could mean that the task of removing it requires assistance from someone else. There is no need to act on this contemplation immediately, it is more about formulating a plan to act upon or simply making a decision one way or another.

UPDATE: The shower curtain has been claimed. Thanks all for reading :)
It's Tuesday, I realize but I'm going to backtrack and do Monday's task.
We have an extra reversible shower curtain that we are not going to use, but it shouldn't just get thrown out. It is in excellent condition - I just got an itch and swapped it out for a different one. I originally bought it last year when we moved to Jersey City and was excited to decorate my very own bathroom for the first time since Joe and I have been married. Now Joe and I are back to sharing a bathroom in Brooklyn, so we don't need the extra shower curtain.
Details:
72x72 reversible water resistant and mildew resistant shower curtain
Side 1: blue and white stripes
Side 2: blue twigs/floral design
Machine washable
